Top Upcoming Horror Games

The survival horror genre has experienced some interesting shifts in recent years. At the moment, these games seem to be on the rise again. Here at Game Institute, we’re focusing a lot of energy in that particular space with our own survival horror FPS called Dead Earth and the accompanying step-by-step video tutorials documenting its development. Here are a few other upcoming titles which horror fans should definitely keep their eyes on.

Yomawari: Night Alone

This cute horror game from Nippon Ichi puts players in the shoes of a young girl searching for her sister in a town filled with monsters. Yomawari uses a heartbeat system to alert players of nearby monsters so they can hide until the danger passes. It will be out for the PS Vita and PC this October.

Outlast 2

The first-person survival horror Outlast met with high praise for its use of horror, making its sequel one of the most-anticipated survival horror games of 2016. Unfortunately, it has been delayed to early 2017, but it still promises to be even more twisted than the original. Outlast 2 will be released for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Little Nightmares

Another “cute” horror game comes in the form of Tarsier Studios recently-unveiled game Little Nightmares. It was originally announced under the name Hunger, and it stars a girl named Six as she tries to escape the sinister-sounding Maw. Little Nightmares is due out in Spring 2017 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Routine

Routine is a first-person survival horror game for the PC set in an abandoned lunar base, with an aesthetic meant to evoke 80’s science fiction movies. It has nonlinear gameplay, multiple endings, and permadeath. The developers have been quiet about their progress since December, but hopefully we’ll get to play Routine sooner rather than later.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Capcom startled everyone at E3 with the announcement of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a new entry in the longstanding series which looks to shake up the formula—and possibly return to its roots. A first-person demo and combat-free trailers have left some fans dubious about how Resident Evil this new game really is, but information about the main game is still sparse. Resident Evil 7, set to release on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC (and possibly the NX) in January 2017, might just herald Resident Evil’s triumphant return to survival horror.
